June 21, 2018 — The coaching carousel, Part 2

This past season, much was made about how the America East Conference held down the No. 1 positions in the men’s and women’s lacrosse polls simultaneously, with Stony Brook being No. 1 for the women, and the University at Albany being No. 1 on the men’s side.

Today, it was announced that Albany was making a significant coaching move which, I think, will definitely raise the level of tactics and recruiting in the league. Former All-America and U.S. women’s national teamer Katie Rowan has been hired to head the women’s lacrosse program in Albany.

The last few years, Rowan has learned about being a head coach by holding down the position for two years at Wagner, where she brought the Seahawks to the NCAA Tournament in her first season. Previously, she held down assistant coaching positions at Syracuse and at UAlbany.

Rowan, as a player, was spectacular. She was Syracuse’s all-time leading scorer upon her graduation, and won gold medals for the United States at the FIL World Cups in 2009 and 2013. If she can attract national-level recruits from the state of New York, especially from the capital region, the Danes will certainly be a force to be reckoned with.
