Sept. 6, 2018 — Hope in abundance

The start of a field hockey season is brimming with optimism, full of expectations and goals for individuals and teams.

A couple of teams have made their season already by winning.  Jaffrey John Conant (N.H.) broke a 29-game losing streak by beating Peterborough Contoocook Valley Regional (N.H.) 3-1 earlier this week.

Conant is one of many high schools across America that have not been able to retain coaches for more than one season at a time. But with Jackie Brown returning for a second season, there appears to be more continuity and commitment from the players who have persevered.

“We definitely worked really hard last year, but it didn’t quite come together,” Conant co-captain Katie Marsh tells The Modanock News-Transcript. “This year, it’s really coming together.”

The Orioles got a hat trick from freshman Teagan Kirby after conceding the first goal to ConVal..

A few hundred miles to the west, there is a bit of a renaissance at Central Michigan University. On Aug. 26th, the Chippewas managed a 1-0 win over Saint Louis University. The win, sealed by a Leah Umberger goal, was the first win for the team in their last 33 games.

For the team and head coach Catherine Ostoich, the win comes as an opportune time in the history of the CMU program. A new turf has being installed on campus, and the skill level has gone up. Goalkeeper Lily Amadio has played well for the Chips thus far, and will need more for the team to contend for a MAC postseason berth.

For these two teams, a hearty “well-played!” from this corner.
