Serving the scholastic field hockey and lacrosse community since 1998

Oct. 15, 2018 — The missing matchup

The most recent National Field Hockey Coaches’ Association Division I poll has two teams which have scheduled each other pretty much continuously since 1982. North Carolina and Maryland have met each other 63 times over the years, often in memorable matches ending in overtime, penalty strokes, or dramatic goals.

And it used to be that mid-October would mean a regular-season matchup between the two rival programs.

But these two teams have not met each other in the regular season since 2014. A lot of this, of course, comes from the move of Maryland out of the ACC into the Big Ten.

Thing is, not having UNC and Maryland meet each other on the pitch robs fans of seeing what an Erin Matson can do against Maryland’s defense, or seeing whether Nike Lorenz can solve Carolina’s backfield. We’re currently prevented from seeing a number of awesome U.S. women’s national team pool players meeting each other before (eventually) wearing their national kit in the FIH Pro League.

That, to me, is a shame.
