April 27, 2019 — Inside the room

The weekly polls from U.S. Lacrosse and from the IWLCA are usually a pretty good indicator of who the top lacrosse teams are in NCAA Division I.

Three days ago, the NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse committee weighed in with their Top 10 at the close of play April 21st. On that list, the No. 1 team isn’t Boston College, the side that everyone from pollsters to the American lacrosse intelligentsia have tapped as the favorite.

Instead, the Division I women’s lacrosse committee thinks that Maryland is the nation’s No. 1 team. Boston College is instead No. 2, followed by North Carolina, Syracuse, Northwestern, Virginia, Princeton, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Loyola.

Having viewed most of these teams this season, the commitee’s “macro” view of the NCAA Tournament field is pretty accurate, with BC and Maryland at the top, then you can put a blanket over the third through eighth teams in the Top 10 and they’ll all be relative equals.

But there are going to be a lot of high-implications contests between now and Selection Sunday. Neither of the two most prominent conferences (ACC and Big Ten) have crowned their champion yet. Much will occur in the next eight days, and we’ll see the kinds of changes that can happen when the bracket comes out.
