June 15, 2019 — An all-time coach retires

This week, it was announced that Kathleen “Cookie” Bromage, the head field hockey coach at Enfield (Conn.), was retiring.

But what has made Bromage such a fixture in the small town located only a scant few miles south of the Massachusetts border is her longevity. It’s believed that Bromage has coached in more varsity field hockey seasons, 52, anyone except for the long-time Hanover (Mass.) coach Judy Schneider, who just completed her 53rd season.

Bromage won five state championships in field hockey, and it’s estimated that she has won nearly 500 matches with Enfield, both before and after its merger with Enfield Enrico Fermi (Conn.).

Much has been made of the way that Bromage has merged the Enfield and Fermi programs into a championship contender, going from only four wins their first season to making the Class L semifinals twice.

But one of Bromage’s greatest memories, as told in Enfield Patch, was the first day the team traveled off campus to South Hadley Smith Academy (Mass.).

“I was overwhelmed, getting on the bus, just me and 45 kids heading up to South Hadley for our first game,” she told The Patch. “They were singing up a storm.”

That enthusiasm kept up for a half-century.
