Aug. 2, 2019 — Pan American Games men: Canada 4, USA 0

Since the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis, the Canadian men’s field hockey team has been undefeated against the United States in Pan American Games and Pan American Cups.

At times, Canada has not had it easy. In the last Pan American Cup in 2017, the States took Canada to overtime before losing in a penalty shooout. In 2009, Canada needed an overtime goal in order to win the Pan Am Cup and secure an automatic World Cup berth.

Yesterday, however, the margin was as large as it has ever been. Canada took an early lead and had a 4-0 runout over the Americans. It was the largest margin of victory in a major continental competition for Canada since a 4-0 win in a 2000 Pan American Cup pool match.

Bairaj Panesar knocked in a pair of first-quarter dragflicks off penalty corners for the Canadians, and that was frankly all they needed.

The U.S. men are in solid position to place second in the pool, going into tomorrow’s match against Mexico. The Americans need only win or tie in order to take on the No. 3 team in the opposite pool, which is likely to be Cuba since the Islanders’ next pool opponent is Olympic champion Argentina.
