August 5, 2019 — Pan American Games women: USA 9, Cuba 0

In a day full of shutouts, the United States women’s Pan American Games field hockey team did what it needed to do against an overmatched Cuba side. The States got braces from Danielle Grega and Mackenzie Allessie in the win.

Allessie, as an 18-year-old, now leads the U.S. side in goals with six and is one behind Julieta Jankunas of Argentina for top scorer of the tournaent thus far.

The Americans’ semifinal opponent is Canada, while Argentina and Chile, the team’s that vied for the Pan American Cup final two years ago, contest the other semifinal match.

August 5, 2019 — U19 World Cup: USA 13, Canada 5

The United States U19 women’s lacrosse team has played its three toughest opponents in preliminary-round play, and, on consecutive days, has dispatched Australia, England, and, last evening, Canada.

The Americans staked themselves out to a 9-1 halftime lead and were never headed, as they pretty much did what they wanted to do in all phases of the game: winning draws, playing bend-don’t-break defense, and attack without mercy.

Caitlyn Wurzburger, as her wont, led the U.S. in scoring with three, but the rest of the attack unit, including Belle Smith, Kasey Choma, Michaela McMahon, and Izzy Scane have not been far behind.

The United States has a day off before its crossover match against the 15th or 16th seed of the preliminary round, the identity of which is not going to be known until the completion of today’s game between Ireland and Mexico in Pool D.
