Sept. 7, 2019 — When an athletic department shows its prioroties

This morning, a field hockey game between Maine and Temple was heading into a second overtime period when Kent State school officials, as hosts of the contests, did something which has been heretofore unprecedented.

They stopped the game and cleared the hockey pitch, ostensibly to allow fireworks to be shot off for today’s season-opening football game. Apparently, an area near the school’s hockey pitch was designated as a launch zone for the fireworks, which were for a noon game. The field hockey game was stopped some 75 minutes earlier.

As the University of Maine’s Twitter feed said, “Well, there’s a new one.”

There have been times when field hockey games have run into conflicts with games held on football weekends on college campuses, which is why you are seeing more and more Division I schedules grouping their contests to play a Friday-Sunday schedule rather than having games on Saturdays. I’ve seen it where campuses have had their sports information people put notices in their game programs warning people about crowded and/or expensive football parking.

The thing is, situations like these do very little to dispel the notion that college sports is all about revenue sports, and the remainder of athletics programs can be continuously marginalized with seeming impunity.
