Oct. 5, 2019 — The Saturday Takeaway

This weekend, four sitting state champion field hockey teams — Louisville Sacred Heart (Ky.), Voorhees Eastern (N.J.), Summit Oak Knoll (N.J.), and Kingston Wyoming Seminary (Pa.) are getting together to test each other’s skills and gameplay.

The first of the four games took place yesterday, with host Eastern beating Sacred Heart 9-0.

I’ll be working on a feature on Saturday, so we won’t be doing play-by-play here on the blog, but check the Twitter feed for score postings. However, if you’re going, here’s a capsule look at the four teams:

EASTERN
Record: 11-1
Current champion, NJSIAA Group IV and NJSIAA Tournament of Champions
Leading scorer: Ryleigh Heck (35)
Trending:  Vikings beat Sacred Heart yesterday, but it wasn’t the most important win of the week: Wednesday’s 4-1 win over Medford Lenape (N.J.) was head coach Danyle Heilig’s 500th win at Eastern … Vikings have been on a tear since making a handful of lineup changes … Saturday’s tilt with Wyoming Seminary is the fifth game against a sitting state championship this season.

OAK KNOLL
Record: 13-0
Current champion, Union County Tournament, NJSIAA Non-Public Tournament
Leading scorer: Bridget Murphy (24)
Trending: The Royals earned the top seed to the Union County Tournament, which begins later this month … Cemented its status as the nation’s top team with its performance at the National High School Invitational, outlasting PIAA Class AAA state champion Hershey 5-3.

SACRED HEART
Record: 14-5
Current champion, KHSAA Tournament
Leading scorer: Embry Jane Imorde (13)
Trending: The Valkyries’ tough schedule continues; they are the only team playing three games over the course of this weekend … After this weekend, a key matchup is Oct. 11 when St. Louis Villa Duchesne (Mo.) visits.

WYOMING SEMINARY
Record: 13-0
Current champion, PIAA Class A
Leading scorer: Hannah Maxwell (17)
Trending: Sem defeated its historical rival, Mountain Top Crestwood (Pa.) by a 6-0 scoreline earlier this week ,,, Also came away with non-conference wins over Selinsgrove (Pa.), Maine-Endwell (N.Y.), and Flourtown Mount St. Joseph’s Academy (Pa.).
