BULLETIN: Nov. 2, 2019 — Rampal nullifies a splendid USA comeback

In the end, the United States women’s national field hockey team was a day late and a goal short.

The Applebees pulled back four first-half goals today in the second of a two-game Olympic qualifier to level the two-legged tie at 5-5 aggregate. But India captain Rani Rampal’s goal eight minutes from time ensured that the Eves would make Tokyo 2020 with a 4-1 defeat, but 6-5 overall win.

The States had answered its 11-minute swoon in the first game with a brilliant volley of goals from Amanda Magadan, Kat Sharkey, Alyssa Parker, and Lauren Moyer, leveling the match.

However, that would be all for the American attack for the day, setting up Rampal’s game-winner.

The result of the series sends India’s women to an Olympic Games for the second straight cycle. The Americans were denied a fourth consecutive Olympics.

The implications of the defeat may wind up being enormous, depending on the degree to which USA Field Hockey makes the substantive changes needed for the betterment of the game nationwide.
