Nov. 8, 2019 — Friday Statwatch for games played through Nov. 6

Good morning, and welcome back to Statwatch, our weekly deep dive into national field hockey statistics that connect the present to the past and explains what is going on.

Tomorrow, there are going to be 17 field hockey games played on either side of the Delaware River between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. A number of them have statistical significance, such as whether Voorhees Eastern (N.J.) can win its 21st consecutive state championship.

There’s also going to be a rematch of last year’s state final in the Class A quarterfinals when Kingston Wyoming Seminary (Pa.) takes on Newport (Pa.).

But the one which should be the most interesting is going to be a matchup of offense vs. defense. That’s the PIAA Class A matchup between Oley (Pa.) Valley and New Hope-Solebury (Pa.). Oley Valley has senior Sophia Gladieux, the fifth-leading goal-scorer of all time (202), while New Hope-Solebury (Pa.) has not given up a single goal in 22 games. It’s an unscored-upon streak that is amongst the best ever.

Who will win? Go see the game.

Below is our usual grouping of American scholastic field hockey statistics, culled from, amongst other sources, MaxPreps, Berks Game Day, PhilaFieldHockey.com, The Washington Post, Long Island Newsday, The Boston Globe, the KHSAA, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and The Denver Post.

We really like MaxPreps, because it is easy for the average coach, athletic director, or student manager to register for the MaxPreps.com platform, and we encourage you to get your fellow teams as well as perhaps your conference, league, or your state governing body to enter field hockey information there, so that we can aim for as complete a statistical picture of the country as possible.

Though we’ve gotten better over this year, we still think we’re missing numbers. If you see something that needs attention, feel free to send us an email at TopOfTheCircle.com. Give us a name or a bit of documentation (a website will do) so that we can make the adjustment.

Thanks for stopping in; back next week with, hopefully, a better list.
