Sept. 1, 2020 — Patching together a torn quilt, without asterisks

The 2020 domestic field hockey season is going to be different from all others since at least the final season that the CIF San Diego Section played its field hockey in the winter months.

The 2020-21 academic year will have two, if not three, windows of field hockey. One will be the traditional fall season, with New Jersey joining in around the first week of October.

Another window will start in February and go through the first week of March. A third window could see field hockey being played during the traditional spring season, ending as late as the first weeks of July. Yep, there’s at least one governing body contemplating field hockey ending in the early summer.

For U.S. colleges, only the ACC will be playing field hockey in the fall, with everyone else joining in for a spring season (and presumably, an NCAA championship).

As such, this website will try its best to keep tabs on this bifurcated sport. However, we’re not going to be publishing a weekly Top 10; instead, we’ll be publishing a preseason Top 10 next week, and bracketing it with a Final Top 50 sometime next year once all high-school hockey has completed play.

Statwatch will be a weekly thing, but we’re pretty sure that we’ll be creating more than one pool of statistics over the course of the year — one for the fall, one for the winter, and one for the spring.

I invite you, gentle readers, on this new journey kicking off the 22nd year of this site. And yes, it is a year like no other.
