Jan. 16, 2022 — The Djokovic saga ends

It would appear that, beginning at 7 p.m. tonight, the 110th Australian Open tennis tournament will take place without world No. 1 Novak Djokovic. After days of appeals and all manner of political maneuverings, Djokovic is not being allowed to ply his craft because of violations of health and safety protocols.

Thing is, it turns out that Djokovic’s ultimate expulsion was on a different and more troubling set of grounds.

Australian immigration minister Alex Hawke, rather than using regulations, metrics, or medical science to justify the expulsion of the tennis player, instead invoked special powers to deport people who were a threat to good order in the country.

Hawke’s contention is that Djokovic’s mere presence in the country, as a public figure who did not get vaccinated, represented a threat to Australia.

“Rightly or wrongly he is perceived to endorse an anti-vaccination view and his presence here is perceived to contribute to that,” said government attorney Stephen Lloyd to Australia’s Federal Court, the highest court in the land.

It’s the kind of logic that has been used by Immigration and Naturalization Service minions to prevent immigration to the United States by persons holding ideologies that the government does not like.
