June 2, 2022 — The U-21 group with a lot of (exciting) spare parts

This week, United States U-21 national field hockey coach Tracey Paul, fresh off a Junior World Cup which saw the team finish in eighth place, is taking a new U-21 squad to a five-nations tournament in Ireland in less than three weeks.

It’s a team which may be unknown to most of you, but there are plenty of exciting new names in the mix. Start with Ryleigh Heck. Yep, that Ryleigh Heck, the one with a record performance of 125 goals last fall. And speaking of South Jersey, it is also represented by another exciting and skilled player named Olivia Bent-Cole, a rising senior at Cherry Hill Camden Catholic (N.J). Add also Northwestern’s Lauren Wadas and Annabel Skubisz, Liberty’s Reagan Underwood, and Maryland’s Emma Deberdine and Rayne Wright, and you have considerable college experience.

But the roster is also filled with a lot of players who may be a mystery to you, but they all have reasons for their selection. Jans Croon is a player you may not have heard of, but you know her high school, San Diego Torrey Pines (Calif.). Caroline Ramsey is a graduate of Summit Oak Knoll (N.J.). Abigail Tamer played her school ball at Dexter (Mich.), and showed herself very well a couple of years ago at the National High School Invitational. Pyper Friedman, similarly, played very well at the NHSI a few years ago for Towson Notre Dame Prep (Md.).

Keep an eye on this group. Some of these players may wind up with more senior duties sooner rather than later.
