June 8, 2022 — A “builder” finds a more complex sandbox

Mindy McCord has done some great work in building the sport of lacrosse in the state of Florida.

Starting in 2006, she was the girls’ lacrosse coach at Ponte Vedra Nease (Fla.), bringing that team to local and regional prominence by the time she left for Jacksonville University in 2010. Jacksonville became a good mid-major lacrosse team which made it to the NCAA Tournament out of the Atlantic Sun Conference.

The last three times the Dolphins were in the NCAA Tournament, they won their opener but found their second-round opponents a bit too much. The last two NCAA losses, in 2021 and 2022, were to Florida.

McCord, last week, made a lateral move in her coaching career, one which could yield great benefits down the road. She became the head coach of the new South Florida women’s lacrosse program. The team will be begin play in the American Athletic Conference in the fall of 2024. As such, the program could very well benefit from competing against the likes of Temple, Old Dominion, Vanderbilt, James Madison, and, interestingly, Florida.

I guess we’ll know in a couple of years how the teams and fans react to a North Florida derby.
