June 11, 2022 — A sprint to the end

This morning at 5 a.m., the ragtag members of the U.S. women’s field hockey team will be taking part in a Test against Spain, one of eight the team will be playing between now and the end of June to finish out the States’ participation in the FIH Pro League.

The U.S. team sits ninth and last in the league table, having only garnered one point in a shootout loss to England in April. But with eight games to go in 15 days, the side has a chance to gain ground quickly.

Spain is the first challenge, with games this morning and Sunday morning in Antwerp, Belgium. The next four games, the Americans play China and India in Rotterdam twice each in a span of five days (June 18-22). After that, the fixtures end with a doubleheader against Belgium in Den Bosch, Holland.

That’s a half-season of the FIH Pro League in slightly more than two weeks.

Given the near-complete roster turnover for the U.S. women since losing the Olympic qualifying series to India in 2019, it’s difficult to envision the team being able to overcome an eight-point deficit to China.

But stranger things have happened in the world of sport.
