This past week, and the next two, consist is one of the most telling stretches of girls’ scholastic lacrosse we have seen in the quarter-century we’ve covered the sport. A number of top intersectional and league matchups have fans on the edge of their seats and fingers on keyboards and smartphones anticipating the results. The culmination of the IAAM season in the next two weeks will be a major milepost for the nationwide landscape of the game for 2024.
1. South Huntington St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) 12-0
The Friars got five goals from senior Tess Calabria in a 9-2 win over Summit (N.J.) last weekend in the Gains for Brains showcase. This is a team you need to go and see because of their excellence of execution on both ends of the pitch
2. Olney Good Counsel (Md.) 17-0
The Falcons beat Washington St. John’s College (D.C.) 16-7 last Friday; the WCAC playoffs begin next week
3. Owings Mills McDonogh (Md.) 12-1
Since their loss to Newtown Square Episcopal Academy (Pa.) a month ago, the Eagles have raffled off 11 straight victories. They were to play Brooklandville St. Paul’s (Md.) yesterday to close out the IAAM regular season
4T. New Canaan (Conn.) 8-1-1
The Rams had a one-goal lead at three-quarter time, and had several chances in overtime, but the game with Darien ended in a 5-all draw
4T. Darien (Conn.) 6-2-1
The Blue Wave got a goal from Hope Hapgood to level their match with New Canaan 5-5, but neither team scored in overtime
6. Manchester (Md.) Valley 12-0
Mavericks end regular season Thursday against Eldersburg Liberty (Md.) and should lock up a No. 1 seed for the state tournament
7. Garden City (N.Y.) 11-1
Kyle Finnell had five goals and Tori Ottomanelli four in an 11-8 win over Summit Oak Knoll (N.J.) in the Gains For Brains tournament
8. Newtown Square Episcopal Academy (Pa.) 15-1
The Churchwomen had a game against Bradenton IMG Academy (Fla.) in an 8-3 victory; the team has tough games with Villanova Academy of Notre Dame de Namur (Pa.) and Fort Washington Germantown Academy (Pa.)
9. Charlottesville St. Anne’s Belfield (Va.) 17-1
Saints are going to be the top seed in the VISAA Division I tournament in what is very much a season of redemption
10. Denver Colorado Academy (Colo.) 13-0
Mustangs welcomed the nation’s top prospect in Eliza Osborn, edging Highlands Range Valor Christian (Colo.) 11-10
