Serving the scholastic field hockey and lacrosse community since 1998

Dec. 19, 2022 — An inspired hire

I didn’t want to go much further without recognizing the fact that Katie Gerzabek Salem was hired as the head field hockey coach at Towson University last week.

Salem had played for the University of Maryland before going on a coaching voyage that saw her assist at Syracuse and Temple before a two-year stint at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn.

Normally, you don’t see a hire into Division I from a Division III institution. But Salem is no ordinary hire. She had an illustrious career not only at Maryland, but for the U.S. indoor national team for 11 years.

And she walks into a situation where the infrastructure is amongst the best in Division I. The Towson University Field Hockey Complex is just behind the school’s basketball arena, and is a state-of-the-art water-based turf facility.

The teams, however, have forever underachieved. Only three times since the founding of the varsity program at Towson have the Tigers gotten double-digits in victories.

Somehow, with the number of improving teams in the state of Maryland, I think Salem can have a significant impact on the Tigers’ fortunes.
