Feb. 4, 2023 — It all begins today

This afternoon at 1 p.m., umpires in Mars Hill, N.C., Greeneville, Tenn., and Hartsville, S.C. will walk to the middle of a circle and will fit a yellow rubber ball in the upper third of two crossed lacrosse stick heads.

After settling the players down, the head umpire will back away and blow a whistle.

Sticks will whisk, arms and legs will be in full play.

The 2023 collegiate women’s lacrosse season will begin today with five games in NCAA Division II, hopefully none taking place in the extreme cold that has enveloped much of the eastern half of the United States.

Division I debuts next weekend, with a massive Division III kickoff Saturday on Feb. 18th with 25 games. Yep, 25.

Well, I guess this is what is happening with lacrosse developing a nationwide footprint. Teams are getting early starts, playing their openers in the dead of winter in order to not play two games per week in a shorter season.
