Feb. 19, 2022 — One of the nation’s best hangs up her whistle

Karen Doxey, who for the last 35 years coached the Richmond (Va.) Collegiate field hockey to eight state championships, has announced that she will be retiring this June.

Her 641 wins are tied with Elvetta Gemski of Mountain Top Crestwood (Pa.) for 11th place all-time for field hockey coaching wins. Here’s our back-of-the-envelope Top 20:

1015* Susan Butz-Stavin, Emmaus (Pa.)
878 Laurie Berger, San Diego Serra and Canyon Hills (Calif.)
854* Linda Krieiser, Hummelstown Lower Dauphin (Pa.)
839 Nancy Williams, West Long Branch Shore Regional (N.J.)
746 Angela Tammaro, Greenwich (Conn.) Academy
741* Karen Klassner, Kingston Wyoming Seminary (Pa.)
718* Cheryl Poore, Harwich (Mass.), Monomoy (Mass.), and Nauset (Mass.)
709* Eileen Donahue, Watertown (Mass.)
689* Sharon Sarsen, Shrub Oak Lakeland (N.Y)
689 Matt Soto, Middleburg (Pa.), Middleburg Midd-West (Pa.), and Millersville Penn Manor (Pa.)
641 Elvetta Gemski, Mountain Top Crestwood (Pa.)
641 Karen Doxey, Richmond (Va.) Collegiate
630* Bob Derr, Lititz Warwick (Pa.)
619 Cathy Keiser, Selinsgrove (Pa.)
610* Patty Provost, Worcester Notre Dame Academy (Mass.)
610 Claudia McCarthy, Millville (N.J.)
609 Wendy Martin, Louisville (Ky.) Collegiate
600 Anne Horton, Asheville (N.C.), North Ridgeville Lake Ridge Academy (Ohio), and Gahanna Columbus Academy (Ohio)
594* Debby Watson, St. Louis Villa Duchesne (Mo.) and Chesterfield Barat Academy (Mo.)
587 Maurene Polley, Malvern Villa Maria (Pa.)
* — Active for 2022 season

If you note the list above, you’ll see that three of the coaches — Laurie Berger, Anne Horton, and Doxey — have retired during this current offsesaon, leaving only nine out of the top 20 coaches currently active in scholastic field hockey. Compare that to about a decade years ago, when the entire Top 10 at the time were active in the schools.
