Feb. 20, 2022 — The wavering victory lap

Today, in Charlottesville, Va., the final season of Chris Sailer’s legendary and Hall-of-Fame lacrosse coaching career begins as the Princeton Tigers travel to Virginia.

It should be a final season filled with celebration for the coach who brought Princeton lacrosse titles in 1994, 2002, and 2003. Indeed, the Tigers were close to a potential three-peat in 2004 but did not have the best day against a good Virginia team as well as a hot weekend made hotter by the steel stands at Princeton Stadium focusing the sunlight like a wok onto the grass surface.

These days, the Tigers play at 1952 Stadium, a great little bandbox of a home ground just across the road from the football stadium. All seven home games for Princeton this year are themed, with a salute to military service, first responders night, a scholastic night, and a Pride night.

The odd thing about these home games is that they do not fit a pattern. It’s not as though you can mark your calendar for Saturdays at 1 p.m. to make the walk down to watch a lacrosse game. Indeed, this year, the Princeton women play their Saturday home games at noon, 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. And the weekday games are Tuesday at 7 p.m., and Wednesday at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Compare that to the Princeton men’s lacrosse team, which gets four Saturday home games at 1 p.m.

I understand the hodgepodge of broadcast times, given the world of streaming internet for sports television. But something doesn’t seem equal here.
