Today, the U.S. men’s indoor national field hockey team won a trophy. It wasn’t at a major FIH world-level event, but it was a pretty significant tournament.
With a goal with 17 seconds showing on the clock, the U.S. defeated the Austrian club side S.V. Arminen 3-2, giving the U.S. its first championship since an American split squad won the women’s championship in 2017. The Americans were a perfect 6-0 in the tournament.
The title-winning goal was scored by veteran U.S. forward Aki Kaeppeler, who scored his fourth goal of the tournament.
The U.S. was led by the scoring of Patrick Harris and Stuart Kentwell and the goalkeeping of Jonathan Klages. The tournament is preparation for the Stars and Stripes’ participation in next month’s FIH Indoor World Cup in South Africa.
The Rohrmax championship pits invited senior and junior national teams against select club teams in a week-long competition. Competitors this year included the senior national teams from Austria, Belgium, and Indonesia, the junior national teams from Czechia and Switzerland, and club sides S.V. Arminen (Austria) and HAHK Mladost (Croatia).
